Questions

Q: What can I expect from a LIVE IN Casa Carer?
A: Live in care comes into its own when typically someone needs a personal assistant around the house constantly or at various times of the day to assist or carry out varying tasks. The major advantage of live in care is its flexibility. No two days need to be the same and the client can choose a different agenda each day if they so wish. Obviously not every client would want this but nonetheless the flexibility is there. Along with performing the everyday tasks of daily living the carer can also be involved in pastimes and activities. This does not mean however that the carer becomes a “holiday camp entertainer” who takes over the house and everyone in it. Our carers are trained to be active when required but also to be as unobtrusive and retiring when their presence in not required. This ensures that our clients can relax and enjoy the comforts of their homes.

Q:  What tasks can I expect my live-in carer to carry out?
A: Almost anything involved in the process of daily living. This may involve all aspects of care i.e. assistance with getting up, personal hygiene etc. together with all household duties i.e. cooking, cleaning, laundry, ironing etc. There could also be a requirement for shopping or accompanying clients on hospital visits, visiting friends or simply going for a walk. The important thing is that a Care Plan is agreed in advance to clarify the hours the carer will work and also to clarify what is required of the carer. This plan is written down and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure the appropriate care is being delivered.

Q:  Who are these live-in carers?
A: Care workers come from all walks of life. It is our job to make sure we successfully match the carer with the client. That is why it is important to discuss your needs and expectations. Many of our carers have been with us for a considerable amount of time and are very experienced in the provision of care. All Casa carers undergo our comprehensive certification training course prior to placement.

Q: How does Casa Carers recruit their carers?
A: Casa carers come from varying backgrounds with lots of different talents and experiences. Our job is to look at the people we have available and identify those we feel are best suited to you. Every applicant is interviewed face to face and references are fully checked. We at CASA CARERS also insist on full Garda clearance. Our carers then undergo our extensive certification training course.

Q: What sort of support will the clients/caregivers have?
A: We have a support/emergency line which is manned 24/7. Our office is open from 9.00 a.m. to 17.00 p.m. Monday to Friday. Our management team are highly experienced and are on hand to offer advice to both families and caregivers.

Q: What does your carer require in my home?

A: Your Casa carer will require their own room with a bed, wardrobe and T.V. This allows for them to go somewhere during their time off duty (they may choose not to go out). It also ensures they have some “private space”. Normally your carer will eat as part of the family. You would not be expected to provide special meals.

Q: Won’t we get fed up with each other’s company?
A: This is less likely to happen if the carer has built in time off during the day and their own room. It is important that whilst the care needs are being met, the client does not feel they are being watched 24/7. However should there be a personality clash we would of course provide you with a replacement carer. We only ask that you give us at one weeks notice to do this.

Q: Can I have a trial or cancel if I don’t like it?
A: Yes of course you can. We offer a minimum of a two week trial. Sometimes personalities clash and you may find you want to cancel your carer. We do require a week’s notice to do this.

Q: What is the legal position?
A: It may be hard to believe but some live in care providers do not employ their carers. Instead they act as an agent on your behalf. We at CASA CARERS are the employers. As such we handle Payroll, PAYE, PRSI, Holiday Pay, P.60’s, Liability Insurance etc. In effect we take all the responsibilities of being an employer and this is built into our cost. Your contract is with CASA CARERS and we fully accept the responsibilities that brings.

Q: What to do next?
A: Simply contact CASA CARERS and we will send you our full colour brochure. You can contact us with any questions or queries. When you are happy and comfortable you can proceed to the second stage by returning our application form. At that stage we will put things in motion to find you the right carer.
